Background: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is characterised by autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells leading to insulin deficiency. Prompt referral and treatment is important to prevent diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) which remains the commonest cause of death in this condition.
